An Australian first! This week we performed the first-ever EDOF (extended Depth of Focus) ICL (Intraocular Contact Lens) in Australia. Staar Surgical and Device Technology chose us to be the first to access this new lens.

What is an EDOF ICL?

The EDOF version of the lens means that patients will get more spectacle independence as the lens corrects focusing for both distance and near vision.

The EDOF ICL Procedure

The EDOF lens is based on the ICL I have used for 25 years, so the operation is well known with an excellent safety profile.  As a reversible and additive operation it gives patients excellent vision and is the preferred option for vision correction for many patients.

Our first patient was extremely short-sighted (Myopic) and had previous retinal problems.  The day after surgery her vision was 6/6 and she could read everything without glasses.

Find out if an EDOF ICL is suitable for you

We are now able to offer the EDOF ICL to our patients.  The ideal patient will be someone in their late 40s who has high myopia and is motivated to become spectacle-independent with a safe and fast surgery.

If you are considering vision correction surgery and are quite short-sighted you should consider an EDOF ICL. This would offer a safer and better intervention that corrects for both distance and near vision and still leaves the eyes balanced.
