75 years since the first Intraocular Lens(IOL) was implanted; such an important advance in medicine and benefit to patients.
It is remarkable that 75 years later we are still searching for the perfect lens; one that will give a natural, full range of vision in all patients with no unwanted side effects.
IOLs today give amazing vision but there is always a compromise!
It is also remarkable that the company behind the first-ever IOL is still in the business and developing new lens technologies. Rayner has recently introduced the Galaxy IOL which is now registered in Australia and commercially available for patients.
The Galaxy IOL uses a novel optical design that moves away from the more common diffractive technology (that has the intrinsic problem of halos at night). The lens utilises a spiral refractive element to create the near vision with a continuous transition zone to minimise unwanted visual phenomena.
Galaxy is designed to be a full multifocal IOL giving a full range of spectacle-free vision with minimal side effects. Galaxy IOL also corrects preexisting astigmatism with a wide range of toric powers.
Our early use of the Galaxy lens has delivered excellent patient outcomes with good distance, intermediate and near vision. As with any new optical IOL design, we will proceed cautiously with thorough follow-up with our patients to ensure that the early excellent results are consistent. Also important is the incidence of unwanted visual phenomena is reduced compared with those seen with diffractive multifocal IOLs.
At present, we offer patients a full multifocal IOL. These are perfect for patients motivated to be independent of spectacles for all ranges of vision and accept the night vision haloing around lights that always occurs. With further experience using the Galaxy IOL it may become the preferred full multifocal if we can demonstrate improved quality of Vision.
