Dreaming of Being Glasses Free?

If you’ve had enough of wearing spectacles or contact lenses, you may be interested to know about a new laser refractive procedure that is now available at my clinic in Bondi Junction, Sydney.

Refractive surgery in itself is nothing new – eye surgeons have been offering this form of vision correction for over 30 years now – and I have provided laser surgery for over 20 of them!

However, as with any surgery, we’ve seen significant improvements in procedures and outcomes during this time.

These days we can offer laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). Each of these procedures has its own nuances; some are more suited to particular patients than others.

For the past few years, my ‘go-to’ refractive procedure has been SMILE – or lenticule based laser vision correction. That’s because the evidence shows patients who undergo SMILE experience faster healing times with less dry eye than LASIK or PRK. With this comes the ability to return to normal activities – like driving, work and exercise – more quickly.

SMILE: Smooth Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis

The latest innovation in laser refractive surgery is SILK (Smooth Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis), a procedure that takes advantage of Johnson & Johnson Vision’s innovative ELITA Femtosecond Laser System.

According to Johnson & Johnson Vision’s Global Head of R&D, Xiao-Yu Song, “The ELITA System represents a generational leap in corneal refractive technology, leveraging advanced technologies and designs to deliver improvements in surgical experiences and patient outcomes”.

Mr Song has also stated that “Early clinical results have shown promising visual outcomes and patient satisfaction data”.

Most importantly, the SILK procedure can successfully be used to perform refractive correction on patients with myopia, with or without astigmatism.

I’m excited to have been selected by Johnson & Johnson Vision to become a reference centre for this new technology and the SILK procedure. If you are interested to find out more about it and whether SILK – or another procedure – is the best strategy to correct your vision, let’s talk.
